3-1. Abstract

Abstractの内容とは？

Using the isotrope technique, the diffusivity of carbon in sintered tungsten has been measured in the temperature range from 500 to 1000 K to be: D = 1.2×10^9exp(-2.1[eV]/kT), where k is the Bolzman constant and T is the absolute temperature. The effect of annealing on the carbon diffusivity has been demonstrated. Due to this effect, the activation energy for diffusion is reduced to 1.5 eV at temperatures below 800 K while the frequency factor remains unchanged.

 

研究の目的を述べるのはIntroduction、実験についてもっと詳しく述べるのはExperimentalのセクション、結果についての評価はResults and discussion。

 

国際会議のAbstract

国際会議の申し込みに提出するAbstractを書くときは、上記のような論文各セクションの機能的原則にこだわらず、緒論や結論に書くべき内容の一部もAbstractに書き加えてもよい。

 

Abstract英語の悪い例1

The effects of impurities on hydrogen diffusion behaviors in tungsten have been investigated in detail. We have improved the model in Ref. 10 to deduce a new theory.

 

The effects of impurities ⇒ theが要らない。読者はAbstractを初めてこの文で見るため、また、後に続くのが名詞の複数形であるため。
behavior ⇒ behaviorは、どんな時でも単数形と覚えておく。どうしても異なる挙動を複数形で表したい場合は、むしろactionsやreactionsなどを使ったほうがよい。
in detail ⇒ 不要。「自分の研究で何かを詳しく調査する」とは言わない。
We have improved ⇒ weを主語にしてAbstractで使うのはいかにも不自然である。
in Ref. 10 ⇒ Abstractに引用文献を載せるのはご法度。

 

書き直すと、
Impurity effects on hydrogen diffusivity in tungsten have been analyzed, using a new theory.

 

Abstract英語の悪い例2

Low-density operation is presently limited by breakdown requirements, but we hope that new gas valves with supersonic nozzles will allow for a further reduction in density in long-lived plasmas.

 

we hope that... ⇒ Abstractに著者の希望的観測を書いてはいけない。客観的な事実のみを説明する。
long-lived plasmas ⇒ あまりにも非科学的、口語的な表現。大小、長短などを表す形容詞を使うときは、必ず比較の対象を示すのが科学者の常識である。
